Tribute South West 1 – West
North Petherton 26 – Coney Hill 10
Saturday 12th December 2015
Report By Simon Freeman
In the battle of the basement clubs Pethy managed to secure a bonus point with the last play of the game !! A tough encounter and even though there is plenty of the season to go a ‘must win’ match for both teams if they have ambitions to stay in the division!
Captains comments (Damian Griffin) “just the boost we needed and we hope to carry on next week !! We kept a good defensive structure most of the time and hit our strike moves in attack when the time was right. We felt comfortable. The 2nd half was a bit shaky but that is down to physical fitness !! I’m pleased we could give the great supporters some cheer in a season which so far has been tough !”
The game started perfectly for Pethy as within a minute winger Gavin Hancock rounded his man and chipped over to score, Harry Roberts converted (7-0). Coney Hill bounced back and created chances for themselves with their backs prominent. In the 12th minute Ryan Barnett narrowed the gap with a well struck penalty. Coney Hill continued to move the ball round but Pethy held firm and began to turn the tables with the forwards supplying some good ball and in the 16th minute Hancock went over for his second to stretch the lead 12-3.
Both teams continued to create opportunities in the blustery conditions which influenced tactics, Pethy slightly held the upper hand and after a couple of short breaks from the forwards Jack Kohler got himself over the line, Roberts converted to complete the first half scoring. (19-3)
The second half saw a turgid battle as both teams battled with dogged determination reflecting the importance of the game. Pethy had a golden opportunity but were unable to finish when in striking distance. The game generally moved about three or four phases until another set piece !!
Nerves were sent jangling when the visitors scored a good team try from Sid King, Barnett added the extras with an excellent kick. Coney Hill had their tails up and moved into the Pethy 22, Pethy kept their shape and discipline to shut them out and eventually force their way out.
As the game entered the last minute Pethy put together some good plays and began to stretch Coney Hill until the ball was in the hands of James Taylor who strode over the line, Roberts slotted over with the last kick of the game to finish the game 26-10
